What If My Baby Doesn’t Sleep During Their Newborn Photos? (Aurora, Colorado Guide)

If your baby doesn’t sleep during their newborn photos, it does NOT mean the session is ruined, your baby is “bad,” or that you won’t get beautiful images.

Honestly, awake newborns can be absolutely magical.
And this is one of the biggest fears parents have before coming into my Aurora newborn photography studio.
I hear it all the time:
“What if my baby won’t sleep?”
“What if they cry the whole time?”
“What if we can’t get any photos?”
And underneath those questions is usually something deeper:
“What if I’ve already failed somehow?”
So let me say this first:
You have not failed.
Your baby is not broken.
And I promise this is not the disaster you think it is.
Most Newborns Actually Do Sleep During Sessions
Especially babies under 2–3 weeks old.
My studio is intentionally designed to help babies feel calm and comfortable:
warm environment
soft posing transitions
white noise
soothing movement
low-stimulation atmosphere
One of my favorite tools is my Baby Shusher. It quietly shushes in the background and helps create a really repetitive, calming environment for babies.
I also let families choose the music playing during the session because I find babies often settle better when the environment feels emotionally calm and familiar.
The goal is never to “force” sleep.
It’s to create an atmosphere where sleep happens naturally.
But Awake Babies? I Actually Love Them.
Truly.
One of my favorite things about awake newborn photos is trying to see their eye color through the lens.
Sometimes those newborn photos are the first time parents really see their baby’s eyes clearly.
And awake babies show something completely different than sleepy babies.
Sleeping images feel:
dreamy
peaceful
awe-filled
Awake images feel like:
“Oh my gosh. That’s my baby.”
You start seeing personality.Expressions.Recognition.
Even that young, babies already feel like themselves.
What Actually Happens If Baby Won’t Sleep?
I go with the baby.
That’s probably the simplest way to explain my philosophy.
If baby comes in awake:
we begin with awake portraits
I capture “mugshots” (my favorite awake close-ups)
we work gently and calmly
I follow baby’s flow instead of fighting it
And honestly?
Most babies eventually drift off naturally once they feel comfortable.
But even if they don’t?
The session still works beautifully.
I once photographed a 4-month-old baby who stayed awake almost the entire session — and his gallery is still one of my favorites ever.
Another session involved a 6-month-old NICU baby who stayed awake more than half the session, and the images turned out incredible.
Awake does NOT equal failed.
Different? Sometimes.Beautiful? Absolutely.
The Session Is Usually More About the Parents Than the Baby
This realization hit me hard during one particular session.
The baby had a tongue tie, had just been to the chiropractor, and everyone was exhausted.
The parents were incredibly overwhelmed.
About halfway through the session, I had already captured enough images for a
beautiful gallery, but I could feel something deeper:
they needed a break.
So I stopped the session and invited them back another day.
When they returned?
Everything changed.
The baby slept peacefully.
The parents slept peacefully.
The entire room felt different.
That’s when it really clicked for me:
sometimes the stress in the room matters more than the baby’s behavior.
Babies feed off emotional energy.
And one of the most important things I learned — from another newborn photographer years ago — is:
you set the emotional state for the baby.
Calm Babies Start With Calm Energy
When a baby becomes upset during a session, my first job is regulating myself.
I focus on:
calm breathing
repetitive motion
gentle support
slow transitions
maintaining a peaceful environment
Because babies feel all of that.
I had a really difficult sleeper myself as a parent, and honestly, every fussy baby session feels like an opportunity to use all the tools I wish I’d had back then.
Even physically, the way I hold and support babies matters.
Sometimes just changing positioning:
relieves gas
relaxes tension
settles their belly
helps them feel secure
It’s never about overpowering the baby.
It’s about supporting them.
Parents Usually Relax More Than They Expect
One of my favorite things during sessions is watching parents finally breathe.
Some parents:
cuddle quietly on the couch
scroll their phones together
nap
watch me pose the baby
just enjoy the calm
One couple even brought a board game and turned the session into a little date.
And honestly?I loved that.
Because newborn photography should not feel stressful.
It should feel like:
relief
support
calm
awe
One parent once told me:
“Your slogan should be: newborn photography… as if you could love your baby any more.”
And honestly? That’s exactly what it feels like sometimes.
What I Want Exhausted Parents to Know
If you’re reading this at 2 a.m. worried your baby won’t sleep for photos…
Please hear this:
You do not need a “perfect” baby for beautiful newborn images.
You do not need to panic.
You do not need to stress-clean your life before arriving.
You do not need to know how to soothe your baby perfectly.
That’s my job.
For many parents, the newborn session becomes:
the first time someone else safely holds and supports their baby while they finally relax for a minute.
And those moments matter too.
Why Experience Matters in Newborn Photography
Newborn photography is not just “taking pictures.”
It’s:
reading baby cues
understanding sleep flow
mastering light
calming parents
creating safety
adapting constantly
That’s why choosing an experienced newborn photographer matters so much.
