When Babies Have Plans of Their Own
One of the things I love most about newborn photography is that no two sessions are ever the same.
You can have the same props, the same colors, and even the same poses planned—but every baby brings their own personality into the studio.
Baby Kira's newborn session was a perfect example of that.
Her family requested a beautiful color palette of sage green, ballet pink, and soft gray. They also brought several meaningful items from home, including ballet slippers, a cherished piece of artwork featuring a religious message, and a stunning Japanese blanket that honored their family's heritage.
Those personal touches helped make this session uniquely hers.
A Session Filled With Meaningful Details
I always encourage families to bring items that tell part of their story.
For Kira, those details created some of my favorite images from the entire gallery.
The Japanese blanket was absolutely gorgeous. The colors, textures, and significance behind it added so much meaning to the session. It served as a beautiful way to honor family history while creating new memories.
The ballet slippers were another sweet addition. They paired perfectly with the soft pink tones chosen for the session and added a personal touch that reflected the family's interests and style.
A Family I'll Always Remember
There are some families who leave an impression long after their session is over.
Kira's family is one of them.
This session took place during a particularly challenging season for my family and my business. Life was throwing more than a few curveballs, and there were moments when keeping everything moving forward felt incredibly difficult.
Through it all, Kira's family responded with patience, kindness, and grace.
As photographers, we spend a lot of time talking about preserving meaningful moments for our clients, but sometimes our clients leave meaningful moments with us too.
Their understanding meant more than they probably realize, and I'm incredibly grateful that our paths crossed during this season.
When Plan A Becomes Plan B
There is one thing that made Kira's session particularly memorable.
For as long as I've been photographing newborns, it has been incredibly rare for a baby to completely decline the classic beanbag poses.
Kira had other ideas.
She made it very clear that she was not interested in any of the traditional naked baby poses that are often part of a newborn session.
And honestly?
That's okay.
Newborn photography is never about forcing a baby into a pose. It's about working with them, keeping them comfortable, and creating beautiful images that reflect who they are during this brief season of life.
We adjusted, adapted, and followed her lead throughout the session.
The Mugshots We Almost Didn't Get
By the end of the session, Kira was ready to call it a day.
We were fortunate to squeeze in a few mugshot portraits before she officially decided she was finished with all of us.
Those images ended up being some of my favorites.
Simple, timeless, and focused entirely on her tiny features.
Sometimes the portraits you work hardest for become the ones you treasure most.
Stunning Family Portraits
While Kira may not have been interested in beanbag posing, she absolutely delivered when it came to family portraits.
The family images from this session are stunning.
There is something timeless about capturing parents holding their baby close, soaking in those first weeks together. Years from now, those photographs will tell a story that goes far beyond what any prop or pose could ever capture.
Those connections are what matter most.
Looking Back
Every newborn session is a collaboration between photographer, family, and baby.
Sometimes everything goes exactly according to plan.
Sometimes babies create their own plan.
Baby Kira reminded me that some of the most beautiful galleries happen when we embrace flexibility, follow baby's lead, and focus on what matters most—preserving the tiny details that make this stage so special.
And thanks to a beautiful family, meaningful heirlooms, and one determined little girl, this session is one I won't soon forget.
