When parents first book their newborn session, they usually think we're going to talk about colors, blankets, and props.

We do...

But only for a minute.

Then I ask a question that usually catches them off guard.

"Tell me about your family."

Because that's the moment your newborn session stops being about pretty pictures...

...and starts becoming about your story.

Most Parents Think We're Choosing Colors

Every consultation starts the same way.

We talk about colors.

The nursery.

Whether you like neutrals or soft pinks or earthy greens.

Parents expect those questions.

Then I tell them,

"Now this is the important part. This is about you and your family."

That's usually when I see the light bulb come on.

"Oh..."

"This isn't just about the baby."

Exactly.

The Tiny Details Matter

The name of my business has always meant more than tiny fingers and tiny toes.

To me, the tiny details are the little pieces of your family's story that nobody else would know unless you told me.

Sometimes it's a career.

Sometimes it's your heritage.

Sometimes it's an heirloom.

Sometimes it's simply a memory that deserves to be preserved.

Those are the details that make your gallery feel like it belongs to your family—and no one else's.

Sometimes Parents Don't Even Think Of Them

One of my favorite parts of a consultation call is gently helping families remember the things that matter most.

I'll ask questions like:

Are there any family heirlooms?
Is there a hobby that's important to your family?
Does your family have a favorite flower?
Is there a career you'd love to honor?
Is there a tradition that's been passed down for generations?

I don't ask because I expect everyone to bring something.

I ask because sometimes the most meaningful ideas haven't crossed your mind yet.

One of my favorite moments happened after a consultation when a mom messaged me and said,

"I totally forgot about my husband's side of the family!"

We both laughed.

That's exactly why I ask.

Not to overwhelm you.

To help you remember.

Some Of My Favorite Images Started With A Conversation

One family shared their Bulgarian heritage.

Together, we planned a beautiful setup inspired by their traditions.

I created a handmade Bulgarian doll for baby to hold and designed a traditional heart arrangement filled with flowers.

When Mom saw the finished images, she was overwhelmed that we had honored her family's history in such a personal way.

Another family brought a beautiful cross necklace that held their baby's aunt's ashes.

We photographed both of their children with that necklace.

It wasn't just jewelry.

It was remembrance.

One of the most emotional requests I've ever received wasn't even for a prop.

A family asked if I could create a composite portrait that placed their newborn beside Grandpa, who had passed away before they could meet.

Everyone knew the moment wasn't real.

But the love behind it absolutely was.

We all cried during their ordering appointment.

Even My Own Family Has A Story

When my oldest daughter was born, I knew there was one photograph I wanted more than anything.

I wanted her photographed with our family's heirloom crystal pieces—the same crystals she'll one day wear on her wedding day.

Today, I can imagine that newborn portrait displayed at her wedding.

A tiny newborn beside a family treasure she'll carry into her next chapter.

That's the kind of storytelling I love.

It's Never Really About The Props

People sometimes ask,

"Can we bring something special?"

My answer is always:

Absolutely.

But what I'm really hoping you'll bring isn't an object.

It's a story.

Because a firefighter helmet isn't just a firefighter helmet.

It's Dad's career.

A handmade tiger outfit isn't just something cute.

It's months of anticipation and planning.

A cross necklace isn't simply an accessory.

It's someone deeply loved.

Those are the photographs that become irreplaceable.
