How to Choose the Right Newborn Photographer

Before you get fifteen tabs deep comparing apples to cars to clouds... let me save you some frustration.
Finding a newborn photographer gets overwhelming fast. Every website has adorable babies. Every photographer has wonderful reviews. Everyone promises an amazing experience. After a while, it all starts to blur together, and you're left wondering how you're supposed to choose.
Instead of trying to help you find the best photographer, I'd rather help you find the right photographer.
Those aren't always the same thing.
Start by figuring out what you love.
I know that sounds backwards because most people immediately open Google and search "newborn photographer near me." I'd actually hold off on that for just a little bit.
Instead, spend a few minutes on Pinterest or Instagram.
Save the images that make you stop scrolling. Don't worry about who took them or how much they cost. Just save the ones that make you think, "I would love that hanging in my home." Once you've collected twenty or thirty images, look back through them. You'll probably notice a pattern. Maybe you're drawn to soft neutrals. Maybe every baby is wrapped. Maybe every image includes parents and siblings. Or maybe you love colorful, whimsical setups. There isn't a right or wrong answer.
You're simply discovering what feels like you, and that's a much better place to start than choosing a photographer before you even know what style you love.
Think about your timing.
If you're still pregnant, this is actually the perfect time to start reaching out. Most newborn photographers reserve sessions by your due date, not your delivery date, and the photographers who take a limited number of babies each month can book well in advance. This is also a good time to think about maternity pictures if they're on your wish list. Some photographers offer maternity and newborn collections together, while others specialize in just one. Before making that decision, take a look at both galleries. You're telling one story, and you'll want to love every chapter of it.
If your baby has already arrived, don't panic. You haven't missed your opportunity. Your timeline might be a little shorter, but the process for choosing the right photographer is exactly the same.
Now start looking at photographers.
This is where Google becomes your friend.
Ask your friends who they loved. Browse websites. Read reviews. Scroll through Instagram. The difference now is that you're looking with purpose because you already know what style caught your eye.
As you're looking, pay attention to more than just the pictures. The website tells a story too. Does it feel warm? Does it feel calm? Can you imagine yourself walking into that studio? I may be a little biased, but I think a photographer's website usually reflects the experience they're trying to create. Mine is intentionally calm because I want families to feel like they can take a deep breath before they ever walk through my door.
Narrow it down.
Once you've found two or three photographers whose work really speaks to you, stop searching and start talking to them. You'll learn more during one conversation than you will after another hour of scrolling.
A good photographer should guide you from here. You'll talk about colors, family portraits, sibling pictures, nursery décor, and all the little details that make your session personal. You don't have to know which props you want.
You don't have to know what colors photograph best.
You don't even have to know what questions to ask.
